Joanna Page, who plays Stacey, also took to Instagram to share her excitement for the show's return.

"Oh my god it’s happening!!! So excited!!!" she wrote. "Last ever Gavin and Stacey! Christmas Day @bbcone Can't wait to start filming!!"

The BBC has also confirmed that the episode will air on Christmas Day.

Rumours about Corden and Jones reuniting to write a new episode began circulating in February, but neither star confirmed the reports until now. Jones even played down initial reports a few months ago during a radio interview when she was directly asked about the speculation.

The new episode comes five years after the 2019 festive special which ended on a dramatic cliffhanger involving Smithy (Corden) and Nessa’s (Jones) complicated on-and-off relationship.

In hilarious and heartwarming scenes, Smithy awkwardly attempted to introduce the Shipmans, Wests, Nessa and his son Neil to his new girlfriend Sonia.

However, things took a turn in the final moments as Nessa got down on one knee in front of Smithy and asked: "Will you marry me?".

Will the new special finally give fans the answer we've all been waiting for?

Gavin & Stacey series 1-3 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The Gavin and Stacey 2024 Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
