Doctor Who has enlisted Loki boss Kate Herron to co-write a new episode of the series.

No stranger to time travel, Herron – who directed the entire first season of the Marvel series – will co-pen an episode of Ncuti Gatwa's debut series of Doctor Who alongside writer and actor Briony Redman (Pont Brec).

The pair's work has produced an entry "not like any other episode", according to showrunner Russell T Davies – and we certainly can't wait to see the results.

Herron has also revealed on Instagram that her episode is one previously confirmed to be starring Jonathan Groff.

“Clearly I can’t get enough of time travel," Herron joked. "It is an absolute honour to write for Russell and Ncuti. We had so much fun and can’t wait for you all to see it.”

Redman added: “As a big fan of Doctor Who and Russell T Davies, it’s been a dream to write on this show.”

Davies went on to explain the collaboration came about when he reached out to Herron after watching Loki.

“This is when I absolutely love my job. Working with the stellar talents of Kate and Briony makes my whole world bigger and brighter, and a lot more fun," he said.

"I was a huge fan of Loki and reached out to Kate to say so – she then introduced me to Briony, and it was all systems go!

"They've written a wonderful script which created unique challenges for cast and crew alike. The end result is gorgeous and thrilling and scary, and not like any other episode of Doctor Who."

Before Gatwa makes his debut as the Fifteenth Doctor, the BBC series is set to air three 60th anniversary specials this year starring a returning David Tennant as the Doctor.

Opening up about the episodes in a recent interview with Empire, Tennant teased: "I was surprised when I saw what that first script was based on, then I read the second script, which is unlike any Doctor Who episode ever.

"These new specials are Russell off the leash."

Doctor Who returns for three 60th anniversary specials later in 2023. The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.

Classic episodes of Doctor Who will be made available via BBC iPlayer in the UK from November 1.
