Doctor Who will reintroduce a classic 1960s villain in this autumn's 60th anniversary specials.

In the newly-released trailer, How I Met Your Mother favourite Neil Patrick Harris waltzes into view as The Toymaker – last seen in the Whoniverse 57 years ago, played by the late Michael Gough.

Causing absolute carnage across multiple scenes – keep an eye out for his gorgeous red toyshop – this German-accented evildoer can even alter his size if the mood takes him.

Elsewhere in the time-travelling footage, the military organisation UNIT and Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (as Jemma Redgrave) also have their long-awaited comebacks unveiled, while Ncuti Gatwa previews what fans can expect from his fifteenth Doctor.

Donna Noble's ass-kicking attitude is a welcome addition to the explosive action, too.

Back when his casting was first confirmed, Harris recalled Davies texting him with a "delicious" offer up his sleeve.

"I get a text from Russell T Davies saying, 'So I'm doing this thing and I've written a thing and there's a part in it that you might like. I think it's delicious. Is it OK if I send it to you?'" he told the Variety podcast.

"And I say, 'Of course Russell, you're Russell T Davies. Of course.' And he sent it and I started reading it and from the very, very first scene I was like, 'Ah, this is delicious,'" he continued.

"It's a great, fun part in ways that I'm not allowed to discuss right now, but I had to say yes. I'm trying to do less and I'm now committing to more, but I think with Russell, it would be a bad call to say no creatively to him."

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
