If you've made your way through to the ending of Good Omens season two already, you may, like us, be left feeling an intense mix of both joy and sadness.

And if you haven't watched to the end of season two episode six just yet, and you care about spoilers, we'd advise that you stop reading for now because we're about to dive right into the emotion of it all.

For those that have been intensely invested in the will they/won't they between David Tennant's quirky demon Crowley and Michael Sheen's gorgeously angelic Aziraphale, this finale probably devastated you. We're right there too, don't worry.

What to Read Next

As we noted in our season two review, these new episodes saw the show tighten its focus on the pair – and was all the better for it. We were granted more sideward glances, innuendos and even blatant acknowledgements of the feelings that have long lingered between them.

In a moment of wonderful fan service, the end of Good Omens' second season finally saw them confessing their love for each other, even if not in so many words.

After witnessing the depths of Gabriel and Beelzebub's affection – oh yes, plot twist, there was another heaven/hell romance – and following a chat with Nina (who, to be frank, voiced everything that viewers have been thinking for a very long time) Crowley had something of an epiphany about his relationship with Aziraphale.

Nina could see it. We could all see it. Finally, Crowley could see it too.

He set the scene for a rom-com boombox moment for the ages; Crowley was finally going to make the move and tell Aziraphale exactly how he felt.

But Aziraphale didn't read the room and had other news, telling Crowley to "hold that thought" before spilling that the Metatron had offered him Gabriel's old job and, on top of that, could reinstate Crowley's angel status.

Crowley was crestfallen. Showing zero desire to return to heaven, even if it meant being with Aziraphale, Crowley pointed out that they should go off together somewhere else, just "you and me", as Gabriel and Beelzebub had done.

Sickly sweet and ever the optimist, Aziraphale was determined to do the 'right' thing and for them both to join the "good guys" on the heavenly side. But Crowley (who had already turned down a spot back in hell) pointed out the hypocrisy: "when heaven ends life here on Earth, it'll be just as dead as if hell ended it."

When it became clear that Aziraphale was not going to waver in the opinion that going to heaven, and trying to make a difference from the inside, was the right thing to do, Crowley declared: "You idiot. We could have been us."

Crowley then (finally!) kissed Aziraphale, before walking out of the bookshop.

Ultimately, Aziraphale and Crowley had both wanted to be together, but they each had a very different idea of how that was going to look.

Aziraphale was desperate to follow the righteous path, wanting to be by Crowley's side for an eternity in heaven. Crowley had wanted to build upon the life they had already shared for eons, continuing to walk the line between the up and the downstairs.

It's far from the happy ending that fans and shippers have been holding out for, but it does see the explicit confirmation of Aziraphale and Crowley's feelings on-screen – even if they are then torn apart mere moments later.

In a way, it's what had to happen in order for each of the characters to stay true to who they are at their cores. While both Aziraphale and Crowley have been known to bend in order to help or save the other – ah, true love – it's always been quite clear that they have vastly different outlooks. That's angels and demons for you.

As our hearts shattered into millions of pieces, Aziraphale jumped into the lift to the light, while Crowley – who watched on until the last possible moment – jumped into his black Bentley and rip-roared away.

We half expected Queen's 'Love of my Life' to be blasting from its speakers, but instead 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square' rang out before Crowley switched it off to sit in the silence.

This song choice is also a devastating one. At its heart a love song, 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square' was referenced in the source material and is often used by fans when talking about the Ineffable Husbands.

What's more the lyrics mention "angels dancing at the Ritz" and, in the finale, Crowley talked of going for breakfast at the Ritz with Aziraphale before Metatron's offer came to light and drove a wedge between them.

The final shot of Good Omens season two was a split-screen showing both Aziraphale and Crowley, and if that wasn't regret painted all over Aziraphale's angelic face we don't know what it was.

Good Omens season 3: Will there be one?

Whether or not the show will come back for a third instalment remains uncertain as of time of writing. Nothing has been announced, either way, about the show's fate.

As far as the storytelling goes, there's plenty that could be picked up again should Good Omens season three get the go ahead – Aziraphale and Crowley's reunion, just for starters.

With talk of the "second coming" being mentioned as part of heaven's agenda, we're sure that Aziraphale will be hoping for some help from Crowley once again.

Show creator Neil Gaiman has apparently said that, while not confirmed, a hypothetical third season is "all planned and plotted" and, if it's given the green light to come into fruition, it would "take the story to a satisfying end" (via Radio Times).

Talk about teasing us!

It was also noted that "strike season" makes "everything harder."

But in essence it seems that any season three, whenever that might happen, would depend on how season two performs for Prime Video. But fans are sure to have their fingers crossed for an official renewal, so that we can finally see Aziraphale and Crowley get the ending they deserve.
