Good Omens season 2 episodes 1-5 were made available for this review, which contains very mild spoilers.
Good Omens has taken everything that was best about its first season and built upon it, making for an even better second outing. Yes, even better.
There's no doubt that the electric relationship between angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) is at the heart of the show. Theirs is undoubtedly a queer love story, and we state that as fact; the warmth and affection that has seen them meeting at every corner of the Earth, through eons of time, is what keeps you sitting firmly on your seat.
What to Read Next
In fact, the biggest criticism to be levelled at Good Omen's debut season was, well, everything else that happened. We spent too much time with Adam the Antichrist as he got more and more precocious, were sent on arduous quests to unite the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and — worst of all — we were forced to watch as Jack Whitehall (sorry, Newton Pulsifer) got down to it with a witch while the world was crumbling outside.
In short, the show lost its magic whenever the story pulled away from Aziraphale and Crowley.
It's as if Good Omens heard our prayers and performed a double miracle. Season two fully centres our angelic demon duo and rarely leaves their sides.
You will be pleased to hear that, despite the time that's past, the chemistry between Tennant and Sheen (played on to great effect in three seasons of Zoom-com Staged) is still very much intact. In fact, it's more palpable than ever.
But sure, as much as we'd love six episodes of the 'Ineffable Husbands' exchanging swoony glances and affectionate jibes, we concede that we still need some narrative storytelling to move the pace along. This time, though, the supporting characters are more directly intertwined with Aziraphale and Crowley's mischiefs, which automatically makes you care more.
Jon Hamm is, of course, back as the hunky Archangel Gabriel — only now he's been hit by a sudden case of amnesia. His more pivotal role must have been as much fun to play as it was for us to watch, and we even see him get his kit off (leading to a delightful gag between our leading lovebirds peppered with some mortal jealousy).
Maggie (Maggie Service) and Nina (Nina Sosanya) — both recast from their previous roles in the Hellish convent that did the dreaded baby swap — return as brand-new characters in season two. Maggie runs a record shop, with Aziraphale as an unlikely yet well-meaning landlord, and Nina runs a cafe across the street from the angel's bookshop.
Naturally, there's much more brewing under the surface for Nina and Maggie, and it marks another opportunity for Good Omens to bask in its own benevolent queerness.
Good Omens' comedic timing is still very much there, punctuating its existential commentary with enough dry wit and devilish humour to balance everything out.
With much of the world-building (including the 'downstairs' and the 'up-up') taken care of in season one, Good Omens' second instalment feels rich and lived in, and it wastes no time in speeding into its story — in a flaming Bentley, complete with Queen's greatest hits.
The omens are good for a heavenly conclusion.
Good Omens season 1 is streaming now on Prime Video, where season 2 will premiere on July 28.
