Doctor Who star David Tennant and Eastenders' Danny Dyer have been pictured looking almost unrecognisable as they film the new Disney+ series Rivals.

The eight-part series is based on the novel of the same name by Jilly Cooper and is part of the author's Rutshire Chronicles.

Rivals explores the ruthless world of independent television in 1986 (which would explain Danny's facial hair), specifically in the fictional county of Rutshire.

Tennant stars as Lord Tony Baddingham, the controller of Corinium Television. His long-standing rivalry with neighbour Rupert Campbell-Black (played by Alex Hassell), a Tory Member of Parliament and ex-Olympian, is about to come to a head over the station's future.

Poldark's Aidan Turner will play TV presenter Declan O'Hara, who gets caught in the crossfire between Tony and Rupert. Described as fiercely intellectual with a bad temper, Declan seeks revenge on Tony after Corinium TV lured him away from the BBC with empty promises.

Victoria Smurfit will play Maud O'Hara, a former actress and Declan's bohemian wife, while Bella Maclean plays Declan and Maud's elder daughter Taggie, who holds the O'Hara family together.

Dyer plays Freddie Jones, a self-made electronics millionaire who's described as 'honourable, loyal and lovable'. Freddie feels like an outsider in Rutshire until Rupert and Tony come to him with a business proposition that could change everything.

Rivals' star-studded cast also includes Lisa McGrillis, Catriona Chandler , Nafessa Williams, Katherine Parkinson and The Inbetweeners' Emily Atack, who will play the Deputy Prime Minister's ambitious new wife.

Speaking about the adaptation of her novel, Cooper, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, said: "I couldn’t have dreamed of a better ensemble cast. I cannot wait to be on set and see them bring the characters I love so much to life. "

"Viewers are in for a treat!" she added.

Rivals will air on Disney+ in the UK. No release date has been announced.
