It's a Sin's Omari Douglas on possible future role in Doctor Who

Doctor Who's upcoming series will see Russell T Davies return as showrunner for the first time since 2010.

Davies has brought with him a whole new cast for the fourteenth series, with Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa taking over as The Doctor and Coronation Street's Millie Gibson playing his companion Ruby Sunday.

But before Gatwa was announced as the latest incarnation of the Time Lord there had been rumours that It's a Sin star Omari Douglas could be cast in the role, after working with Davies on the Channel 4 drama.

Now, speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Douglas addressed whether he'd be up for a role on Doctor Who in the future.

"Yeah, I mean, yeah of course!" he said. "Russell is great at getting people that he's worked with to come and collaborate with him on something else... So who knows... I'd love to play an alien or something."

The actor also said he'd love to work with Davies again, describing him as a "mentor".

"He's been incredibly supportive of what we've all been doing since we made that show, and he is a mentor as much as he is a showrunner and someone who makes amazing work for television, so yeah it's a privilege to have someone like that on your side," he added.

Last December, Davies was asked about the rumours that Douglas was in line for the role and described the actor as "fearless and limitless".

"He's just got everything you need in a leading actor, he's fearless and limitless. And stays great fun, even when the subject matter is tough," the showrunner said.

"We had the works with Omari [in It's a Sin] – sex scenes, drag, riots, grief – and I don't remember Omari having a single question or doubt."

Doctor Who returns in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
