Michael Sheen appears in first-look images of new docudrama Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama.

Inspired by the 'Wagatha Christie' defamation case brought by Rebekah Vardy against fellow WAG Coleen Rooney, the Channel 4 series will see the Good Omens star as Rooney's barrister David Sherborne.

The trial stemmed from Rooney's 2019 Instagram post in which she accused Vardy of leaking her private Instagram Stories to the press. Vardy denied the claims and took Rooney to court for defamation, but ultimately lost the case.

One of the newly released images shows Sheen in Sherborne's barrister wig, bib and gown as he addresses the court.

In other snaps, Game of Thrones' Natalia Tena as Vardy can be seen avoiding reporters, while Chanel Cresswell and Dion Lloyd sit in court as Colleen Rooney and her husband, former footballer Wayne Rooney.

Produced by Chalkboard for Channel 4, the series also stars Simon Coury as Vardy's barrister Hugh Tomlinson and Marci Nagyszokolyai as Vardy's husband and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

"This trial utterly captivated the public with its daily feed of entertaining exchanges and jaw-dropping reveals," director Oonagh Kearney said in a statement when the series was announced in July. "But behind this, is a story of two women under constant public scrutiny, fighting for their reputations."

"The #WagathaChristie phenomenon has become one of the most talked about moments in the history of social media," Chalkboard creative director Tom Popay added. "We're excited to bring the trial to life in such a unique way and we're hoping we can get to the bottom of how this case fascinated and amazed so many."

Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama will air in December on Channel 4, with exact release date to be announced.
