Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker explains why she was scared when Flux first aired

Doctor Who is back for a special celebrating both 100 years of the BBC and wrapping up Jodie Whittaker's time in the TARDIS this weekend.

There are lot of hanging plot threads we're hoping 'The Power of The Doctor' addresses, many of them introduced in last year's Doctor Who: Flux, the show's first series to be presented in serial form since the 2005 revival.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Jodie looked back on the Flux experiment and admitted that she had some reservations about it.

"Well, I was scared when it aired," she said. "It clarified quite a few things, because when you are learning The Doctor about five times – I was like: 'Right. Which Doctor am I in this one? Which timeline am I on this?' I couldn't for the life of me… It got explained to me nearly every day, and I was always like: 'Can you just remind me where I am right now, and which version of myself I am? Am I time, am I this?'

"So seeing it all work – I was like: 'Oh, thank God for that.'

"Because if you'd have asked me what I was doing… It was complicated, really, wasn't it? And especially when… You know, obviously, because it was season arcs. Each episode was built on the next, and then you're realising that stuff linked from before, or even before that.

"It was amazing. It was really brilliant. I'm just really glad that you couldn't tell that I was just dragged in all directions. I mean, I was, and I was meant to be. But as the actor, I was a bit like: 'Sorry, can someone explain this to me?'"

Outgoing showrunner Chris Chibnall called Flux "a massive undertaking" and stated that it was the only way they could have made a 13th series during the pandemic. Although he would have liked another month or two to prepare, he stated that he was very proud of the Sontaran and Weeping Angel-focused episodes.

Following Jodie's exit, Russell T Davies is returning as showrunner with David Tennant taking the lead for a bit before Ncuti Gatwa begins his time as The Doctor.

Doctor Who returns this Sunday (October 23) on BBC One. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams exclusively on BritBox in the UK.
