Ghosts star Jim Howick hopes that the popular sitcom will go beyond season 4.

Following couple Alison and Mike Cooper (played by Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe) as they get to grips with their inherited, dilapidated mansion in the country, which is haunted by all sorts of ghosts from across different time periods, Ghosts has proven a huge success since debuting in 2019.

"I think everyone has an endgame in sight," said Howick during his exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

"I think we would like more series, but I think as the show's grown, it's inevitable that you start thinking about, you know, 'shelf life' and standards – more than anything keeping to a good standard.

"Also, I think it's just the nature of a storyteller, you know? We're all kind of storytellers and I think it's the nature of a storyteller to think of the climax and an ending. But that said, there's nothing definite, yet. It's just in our bank."

As well as co-writing the show, Howick plays dead scout leader Pat Butcher.

But in the same vein as Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan, is the Ghosts team aiming to quit while they're ahead?

"The reason I think most writers try to think of an ending is that scenario really, because the worst thing is to have something cancelled before you've ended it properly. That's when there's a real sense of injustice for the audience, and the writers and the performers," Howick said.

"We're all very lucky to do this, and you're lucky to get one series' commission of anything, it's a very hard thing to get done. So it's not out of a sense of entitlement, it's more serving these characters and satisfying an audience. So yeah, that's another reason why you think of an ending.

"The truth is, is that it's hard, you have to make a decision and the decision should always be the art – the show.

"I think you could go onto sort of 12, 13 series of something which is ridiculous and that really never happens, but then it's about something else. It's about just churning stuff out, and the material will always suffer I think in that respect."

Ghosts season 4 premieres on BBC One tonight (September 23). Seasons one, two and three are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
