Crossfire spoilers follow.

Crossfire just aired its final episode tonight (September 22) on BBC One and while the Keeley Hawes-led show was off to a promising start, fans are not satisfied with the way it ended.

Viewers have praised Hawes' performance, but believe that the series dragged on after the first episode and it did not stick the landing the way they had hoped it would.

The climactic episode saw the two terrorists, Flavio (Pol Sanuy) and Gerardo (Pol Toro), gunned down, with Jo (Hawes) taking down the former in a rooftop standoff.

The brothers' accomplice, Iker (Guillermo Campra), was arrested but not before stabbing Ben (Daniel Ryan) while trying to flee. Viewers later learned the whole siege was rooted in personal vengeance rather than being a political act.

Many complained about the drama making unreasonable choices that made no sense for the plot, and felt particularly disappointed as the first episode, in their opinion, was actually very good.

Hawes played an ex-police officer named Jo, who went on vacation with her family but was interrupted as the shocking events unfolded.

Jo and her husband were enjoying a holiday with friends and a truck load of children but as we watched on, cracks in their marriage started to appear. But that got put on the backburner as the hotel they were staying in was attacked by the armed gunmen and then chaos ensued.

Following the finale, one viewer said: "#Crossfire, 1st episode good, 2nd mmm not sure, 3rd give me my bloody evening back."

Another tweeted: "Could have been so much better. That’s three hours of my life I’m never getting back #Crossfire."

Still, a lot of people were very impressed with Keeley Hawes' performance and said she is "consistently outstanding in everything she does".

All three episodes of Crossfire are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
