Shetland has hinted at the reason behind detective Jimmy Perez's imminent exit from the BBC drama.
Douglas Henshall's final ever episode as the beloved detective is set to air next week on BBC One. Though the reason behind the character's exit has been kept under wraps ever since it was first revealed that Henshall would be leaving the crime drama, his character Jimmy has complained about being exhausted following years in an emotionally-draining job.
However, his unhappiness with his career may not be the only catalyst behind his decision to quit; it seems as though romance could also be on the cards.

During the latest episode this week (Wednesday, September 7), Meg (Lucianne McEvoy) opened up about the impact that Jimmy's work has had on his personal life with her.

"I don't know if I want that in my life," she said.
A clearly dismayed Jimmy responded: "Okay. I understand, if that's how you feel."
Although this seems like Jimmy is resigning himself to the loss of new love, with his storyline coming to an end and Jimmy having lost his wife and messed up his relationship with Alice, could a surprise happy ending be on the horizon?
Henshall first confirmed back in July that he would bow out of Shetland after season 7. In a statement, the actor said playing the role for so long had been a "privilege" and one of the highlights of his career.
"After series 5 of Shetland, [creator] David Kane and I decided we wanted to do 2 more series to complete the story of Jimmy Perez. So series 6 and 7 were commissioned together to give us time to wrap up Perez's story to a satisfactory end," he said in a statement.
"It's been one of the privileges of my career to play Jimmy Perez for almost 10 years and to work with so many wonderful people both in front of and behind the camera, and also to spend so much time in Shetland. The Isles were so much a part of our show and of Perez himself. I'll miss him and the place. I wish everyone involved much luck with whatever happens next."
