Doctor Who's Matt Smith says he might be "too old" to return

If you were holding out any hope that Doctor Who star Matt Smith would ever return to his role in the popular show, you're in for some bad news because the actor has revealed that he thinks he is "too old" to come back to that role.

In an interview with Rolling Stone UK, where he was promoting his Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, he revealed his thoughts on returning to the show.

"Maybe, if it was the right script. I mean, I don't know if I've got too old now. It would have to be really right," he said.

Smith also spoke about the return of David Tennant as the Doctor, saying: "What a Doctor, what an actor, what a bloke. Arguably David is… a totally seminal Doctor."

Discussing the pressure when he took over the role of the Doctor and Tennant's kindness towards him at the time, Smith said: "Yeah. Can you imagine? Because he was as popular as it gets, really. But he was so kind to me, David, in the transition. He's just a good bloke."

The star is currently set to star as Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon. And as it so happens, he seemed to be taken aback by the amount of sex scenes he had to do.

Game of Thrones never shied away from scenes in the bedroom, but House of the Dragon is said to have scaled back on it. Not enough, apparently, because it still confused the actor.

"You do find yourself asking, 'Do we need another sex scene?'" he told Rolling Stone. "And they're like, 'Yeah, we do.' I guess you have to ask yourself: 'What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we're living in]?' And I actually think it's your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written."

He then confirmed that he has plenty of those scenes on the show, "Yeah – slightly too much, if you ask me," he laughed.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spin-off House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21, 2022 in the UK.

Doctor Who's next special premieres in October 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
