James May is best known for presenting motoring shows alongside his petrolhead co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The trio used to host BBC's Top Gear before moving onto The Grand Tour with Amazon Prime Video.

However, May is also renowned for his varying travel documentary shows and most recently has been working on James May: Our Man in Italy.

"We've all done a lot of solo things and we're all doing solo things at the moment," he told Radio Times. "I like doing things by myself, but also in some ways it's harder because you have to provide everything – you haven't got the others to sort of bounce off of or fill up the programme."

However, May insisted there are benefits to both styles of working: "I like having both because I can often do something by myself and then I can go and knock about stuff with the other two, and we can wind each other up and then all of us think, 'Oh gosh, I'm going to go off and do something myself.'"

Despite having worked in the TV industry for many years, May confessed he still gets nervous before any of his shows are aired.

The seasoned presenter explained he often worries he'll be called out over how much fun he has on the job.

"This is the one where somebody goes, 'Hang on a minute, this bloke's just mucking about on the holiday' or something like that," he joked.

Thankfully, May still managed to enjoy his adventures in Italy even without his usual co-stars.

His new travel series consists of six episodes and will see May explore the nation's history, landscapes, traditions and more.

The show comes following the success of James May: Our Man in Japan which was released in 2020.

James May: Our Man in Italy is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.
