Call The Midwife's Jenny Agutter has revealed that she is considering a career change from her role as a nun on the popular BBC drama.

Jenny, who has been acting since she was a child and made a name for herself due to her role in The Railway Children, which releases a sequel movie next week, has played Sister Julienne in Call The Midwife since series one in 2012.

However, the star teased a new career move as she revealed on The One Show this week she would be interested in directing a movie or TV series.

The actress explained: "I am very slow with doing things but I have always loved the idea of being behind the camera really. I love what actors do, I love photographs and I love film, so yes I would love to direct."

Russell T Davies, who accompanied her as a guest on the show, asked: "Why have you never been in Doctor Who? That's the great crime." Jenny, Russell and the The One Show presenters agreed that they would "love" this to happen.

The long-running series has no signs of ending any time soon either, with one of its stars disregarding rumours of it being cancelled earlier this year.

"I think the amazing thing about it [the show] is it's so wonderful getting to be with the characters for so long and not necessarily knowing where their journey is going. We get to live with them," Megan Cusack said. "When people want to stay together, they stay together. And that's what's so beautiful about the show. So who knows. It could go on for years."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
