ITV's newest detective thriller DI Ray aired its second of four episodes on Tuesday (May 3), concluding with a huge twist.
Parminder Nagra (of Bend it Like Beckham fame) plays Detective Inspector Rachita Ray in the new procedural produced by Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio. Ray is promoted to the homicide team for a 'culturally specific' assignment — the murder of Imran.
She instantly suspected it could be a token appointment, calling into question the motivations of her superiors.

During the final minutes of Tuesday's instalment, DI Ray received a tip-off that the victim had been transporting something into the UK to free his family from debt.

It's assumed to be drugs, but when the investigative team tracked down the shipment container and jammed open its doors, they discovered a hair-raising truth: a dozen corpses lay inside, with one lone survivor (not far from death himself) there to save.
This horrific discovery means DCI Kerry Henderson (that's Gemma Whelan from Game of Thrones) — DI Ray's boss — has to finally acknowledge that Imran wasn't the 'honour killing murder' everyone believed it to be, but instead a major trafficking ring incident.

Reacting on social media, the show's viewers were quick to share their surprise, while also praising DI Ray in a general sense.
"I dunno what you guys are doing over at @ITV but you keep smashing it with these dramas," wrote one person, before another added: "Really enjoying #DIRay so far, although that ending...bloody hell."
"[Woah] I expected firearms or drugs to be found, not a case of Human Trafficking" and "Ah man, so many of them as well. How long they were left like this," read two more tweets.
DI Ray resumes tomorrow (May 4) at 9pm on ITV.
