Doctor Who teases spectacular BBC Centenary special

Doctor Who's BBC Centenary special episode will be "absolutely spectacular", one of the show's visual effects editors has promised.

Following the New Year's dramatic, Dalek-filled outing, the hugely popular sci-fi show is set to air another two specials in 2022, with the third and final one set to feature Jodie Whittaker's Doctor's regeneration when it airs as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations.

"I can't give anything away, but I can tell you that it's going to be an absolutely spectacular episode with a lot of visual effects," digital effects coordinator Emily Lawrence recently told Doctor Who Magazine of the episode.

Not so long ago, showrunner Chris Chibnall – who is due to step away from the franchise alongside the 13th Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker, when the 2022 specials conclude later this year – opened up about finishing filming and how working on everything that needs to be done after the cameras have stopped rolling can often feel like an overwhelming task.

"It's a great feeling when you finish everything in studio but in some ways, things actually get busier from that point," he explained to the aforementioned publication in November.

"All the stuff in post-production has been waiting for you. It's like another show on top of the first show you did. We won't actually be finished until we picturelock what we're currently calling the Centenary special."

Recalling how she felt on her last day on the Doctor Who set, Whittaker described herself as "grief-ridden" in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I've shot my version of regen[eration], and it was singularly the most emotional day on set I think I've ever had," she said. "It's a really bizarre feeling, because it's the best time I've ever had on a job, and I made the decision to leave it, so it's a really strange thing to do to yourself."

Before we see the BBC Centenary special, however, Doctor Who is set to return in the springtime with 'The Legend of the Sea Devils', featuring the return of a classic monster.

Doctor Who will air two more specials later this year on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
