Murder mystery fans have spent this week intrigued by the second season of ITV drama Innocent, and they were shocked at the twist reveal in tonight's finale (May 20).
Not unlike Innocent's first outing in 2018, this season was once again based around someone freed from prison after an apparent wrongful conviction.

It's followed the story of schoolteacher Sally Wright – played by Katherine Kelly – and her attempts to clear her name from being accused of killing a student she was having allegedly having an affair with, Matty.
Running an intriguing dual timeline format, fans have been excited to reach the conclusion of the whodunnit and see all loose ends tied up. The series has unfolded throughout the week, with an episode airing each evening after its premiere on Monday.

While schoolgirl Beth confessed to murdering Matty halfway through the episode, viewers remained sceptical. Many believed she was doing it to take the heat off her mum Karen.
But as Sally's ex-husband Sam began to crumble, the ultimate twist was delivered – it wasn't Sally who had an affair with student Matty before his death. It was Sam. Sally deduced this after finding a partially encoded note from Matty to Sam, threatening to tell Sally about their relationship.
Fans were shaken by the development, with one tweeting: "Whew!! now that is a twist!"
"Well I did not see that one coming," another wrote. A third added: "That was a bloody good twist!"

Others pointed out the truly shocking behaviour shown by Sam – letting his wife go to prison for a crime he committed himself.
"Sally got charged for a murder her husband committed but for reasons completely unrelated to the actual murder," one fan said.
Another posted: "Aww bless Sam, who loves his wife so much he let her rot in prison and be publicly vilified as a child killer." Harsh, but fair.
Prior to the finale, the show's cast had promised that the ending would definitely catch viewers by surprise.
"I think people are going to be talking about the resolution quite a bit," Priyanga Burford – who plays Karen – recently told Digital Spy and other media.
And we can't deny that she was wrong.
