His Dark Materials season two finale spoilers follow.

His Dark Materials fans were left in a tearful state tonight (December 20) following the deaths of two key characters in the season two finale.

Even though many of the BBC adaptation's viewers have read Philip Pullman's books, they were still devastated to see Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and John Parry (Andrew Scott) snuff it in emotional scenes.

In the finale, the pair faced an attack from the Magisterium troops, with Lee being shot in the foot as they tried to escape.

Telling John to carry on without him, Lee and his daemon Hester soon found themselves pinned down behind a conveniently large rock.

Later, John bumped into his son Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of the Subtle Knife, and delicately explained why he'd been away from the family for the majority of his son's life.

After explaining to Will that the fate of many worlds rests on him (no pressure ) and that the greatest war ever is coming, John was also shot, sacrificing his life to save his son.

You'd think anyone who's read the books wouldn’t be so shocked by these developments, but it turns out seeing them on screen was impactful enough to render some fans a sobbing mess.

"Seeing this brought to life on screen is devastating. You know what happens but you still want it to be different," tweeted one viewer.

Another wrote: "Even though you know it's coming... really wasn't quite ready for that visual of Lee and Hester."

His Dark Materials season 2 is available to watch on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and Mondays at 9/8c on HBO in the US.
