Poldark aired the dramatic conclusion to its fifth and final series tonight (August 26) on BBC One, leaving fans with just a hint of hope that the show may one day return.
The finale provided some much-needed answers following the packed penultimate episode, namely how Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) managed to foil a secret invasion from the French.
Ross went full turncoat as he infiltrated the "Frenchies'" plot and managed to bring it down from the inside, but it could have quite easily ended in tragedy if it weren't for his old enemy George Warleggan (Jack Farthing), who turned up in the nick of time to fire a shot at the French general.

Closing on a much-needed high note, the ending saw Ross and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) reiterate their commitment to each other on a blowy Cornwall clifftop, as the the latter revealed she is bearing a child.
Soon after, a slow-motion Ross, with his coat heroically flapping in the wind like Batman's cape, prepared to board a ship for France where more action and adventure no doubt awaits.
"I swear to you, my love, I will return," were Ross' finals words to Demelza, and while the BBC has insisted that this is definitely the end for Poldark, that hasn't quelled fans' wishful thinking.
