The BBC's Last Tango in Halifax is set to finally return after nearly three years off the air.

The comedy-drama's future has been uncertain following the two-episode fourth series in late 2016, with Sir Derek Jacobi claiming in 2017 that it was cancelled.

The BBC and star Nicola Walker (Gillian) subsequently said that wasn't the case, so we can now all breathe a sigh of relief as there's official confirmation that series five is on the way.

BBC Director of Content Charlotte Moore revealed to the Radio Times that the show will be back with four new episodes in 2020. Hurrah.

However, the details of the returning cast are yet to be confirmed, so keep your eyes peeled.

Star Sarah Lancashire (Caroline) revealed earlier this year that they would soon be getting to work on the show.

"Yes I have news," she said. "Yes, we do plan to do some more this year. It's a great show, and the genius writer who is Sally Wainwright is on it. She's on the case."

Last Tango in Halifax follows Alan and Celia – played by Jacobi and Anne Reid – two former childhood sweethearts who reconnect and fall in love later in life.

Lancashire and Nicola Walker play their respective daughters on the show, while Wainwright (Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack) has written the series.

Last Tango in Halifax will return to BBC One in 2020.
