It's now been over two years since Tom Hardy's BBC drama Taboo debuted, and fans have been anxiously awaiting a second season.

Created by Tom and his father Chips Hardy, alongside writer Steven Knight, the series got a green light for a second season back in March 2017 so the question is, what's taken it so long?

Speaking to Radio Times, Steven revealed that the reason the show went on hiatus after the first season was because Tom had something more important happening in his personal life.

“I’ve written the first six episodes, and there are two more to do," Steven revealed. "We had a hiatus obviously because Charlotte [Riley, Tom Hardy’s wife] had a baby, but then we’ll be back on it.”

Tom and Charlotte welcomed their second child, a son, in December.

As for what the second season will be like, Steven explained: “Taboo heads west and becomes a little bit more narcotic, more opium-affected."

What to Read Next

Last month, Steven also revealed that he, Tom and Chips have an ending in mind, which would come after a third season.

"If we all stick with it and we all want to keep doing it, it would be three [seasons]," he said. "That’s my plan.

"I have a destination in mind, which is always nice to have if you’re setting off on this big journey, which is what writing three eight-hours is. It’s good to know where you’re headed."
