The news that the cast of The Inbetweeners are reuniting for a New Year's Day special is welcome, of course, but it's not a total surprise.

Although it's been four years since the last time we saw Will, Jay, Simon and Neil together at the end of the second film, the show remains very much in our cultural consciousness. "Bus wanker" is recognised terminology and we're always ready to sarcastically utter a high-pitched "fwend" in the direction of anyone we want to embarrass.

It seems, with the benefit of hindsight, that the comedy was always well-loved and destined for national treasure status. But that's not an opinion shared by star Simon Bird, who in a recent interview shared his initial misgivings with the show.

Buckley added: "I can't remember a time where we all sat down together and popped a bottle of champagne and patted each other on the back to say 'It's a hit'. That never really happened, it was just a real slow-burner before people started to get into it."

Well the boys can definitely put the champers on ice now (or at least get the fishbowls in), because the New Year's Day special (titled Fwends Reunited) is set to be a ringing advertisement for its success, featuring behind-the-scenes footage, a ranking of the funniest moments, and contributions from celebrity fans.

The Inbetweeners: Fwends Reunited will air on New Year's Day (January 1) at 9pm on Channel 4.
