BBC's starry remake of Watership Down – which features James McAvoy, John Boyega and Gemma Arterton among an all-star cast – aired its first episode tonight (December 22).

Despite the A-list cast, it soon emerged that viewers had a big problem with the miniseries, as it seemed that the show's animators actually hadn't seen that many rabbits before.

Instead, outraged viewers took to Twitter to claim that the so-called rabbits actually looked quite a bit more like hares.

With the budget for this two-part miniseries (which concludes on Sunday) reported to be close to £20 million, mixing up your rabbits and your hares is a bit of a rookie move.

And we've reviewed the evidence, and we must admit the viewers have a point – it's the ears that give it away.

Still, it wasn't just the rabbit-hares that had viewers grumbling, as many others didn't have much time for the quality of the animation in general, with viewers sharing that they thought stop-motion or more traditional 2D animation would have been preferable to the computer animation of the series.

Not everyone was opposed to the animation, however:

And at least everyone agreed that the casting was truly brilliant:

At the end of tonight's first episode, we left the band of unfortunate rabbits at war with an unfriendly clan and facing off against brutal farmers armed with shotguns.

Are things likely to look up in tomorrow's concluding episode? Probably not.

Watership Down will conclude on Sunday, December 23. Netflix will distribute the series elsewhere in the world.
