BlackBerry is still struggling through tough times but the company has accepted it may have to give up on smartphones if it continues.

In an interview with Bloomberg, CEO John Chen has said it wouldn't be right to continue with handsets if BlackBerry's current state continues for a "long time".

"At a certain point in time, the economics take over," he explained.

At present, BlackBerry's smartphone share is below 1% and its smartphone turnover fell to $263 million in its most recent quarter.

However, Chen says that they could still cut down the number of models it makes, discontinue low-end handsets and focus on professionals to revive the business' profitability.

For now, there are a few smartphones in the pipeline, including its rumoured Android smartphone codenamed Venice.
