Secret services are investigating the incident at the presidential residence, which took place at 3am on Monday morning (January 26), NBC News reports.
The drone, which is believed to have landed in a tree on White House property, is not being viewed as a threat to security.
President Barack Obama's press secretary Josh Earnest had earlier confirmed that a "device" was found in the White House grounds.
As the Guardian reports, a statement was released by the secret service saying: "An investigation is under way to determine the origin of this commercially available device, motive, and to identify suspects."
President Obama is currently on a state visit to India.
Extra security measures have subsequently been taken, with emergency service vehicles brought in and search of the grounds ordered.
