Tesco is set to open a discount supermarket chain – to rival the likes of Aldi and Lidl – as early as September, according to reports.
On Sunday (July 22),The Guardian reported that the grocery giant is advertising a number of staff roles in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Wandsworth in south London for a "new retail format".
The new-look store is rumoured to be named Jack's, which also happens to be the name of Tesco founder Jack Cohen. There are thought to be plans in the works for 60 stores across the UK.
When asked about the reports, Tesco declined to comment.
As it stands, Tesco currently holds the biggest grocery market share in the UK at 27.7%, followed by Sainsbury's (15.6%) and Asda (15.1%), according to consumer panel Kantar.
However, discount stores like Aldi and Lidl have grown significantly in recent years while more traditional stores have seen a decline. Aldi now possesses the fifth-largest market share and Lidl outstripped Waitrose last year to become the UK's seventh-biggest grocer.
