National Rail launched a Millennial Railcard out into the world earlier this week, offering 26 to 30-year-olds a third off rail travel. Because there were only 10,000 up for grabs, the majority of people hoping to get their hands on one were left disappointed.
But not for long, thanks to a truly bizarre campaign Virgin Trains launched in response, announcing eligible millennial passengers can get the same discount by presenting an avocado when booking. Yes really. Millennials. Avocados. Now all we need is the toast.
Once you can get past the stereotyping and general WTF-ness of it all, the 'Avocard' is actually quite a good deal, and offers a third off all Virgin Trains West Coast journeys from today until midnight on March 20, providing you take an avocado to ticket gates.
People's feelings were mixed. Some thought Virgin Trains' offer was a fair deal:
While others thought it was basically just taking the piss:
As much as Virgin's 'Avocard' is great if you're a millennial travelling by train over the weekend, the ideal scenario would involve National Rail rolling out enough Railcards for everyone, and train travel being cheaper in general. Is that something that can be sorted with a hashtag?
