More and more snack firms are branching out into exotic flavours, from Cadbury chocolate-covered Oreos to chocolate pizza. But Kit Kat's latest taste experiment is something quite untraditional: cough drop-flavoured Kit Kats, released in, where else, Japan.
Japanese Kit Kat flavours are our new favourite thing and much bolder than the brand's UK fare –for every more reasonable combo like strawberry, there are some cultural wildcard staples like edamame beans or Japanese sweet potato.
But this cough-drop flavour isn't a euphemism for, say, some kind of minty after taste. Instead, white chocolate is mixed together with actual throat-lozenge powder. So what did inspire the combo? Why, the ongoing FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
The promo is, erm, inspirational…
If this doesn't really make sense, consider that the face of these Kit Kats above is Yasutaro Matsuki, a long-time Japanese soccer commentator, whose job requires him to keep his voice in mint condition.
Alas, these flavours as ever are only going to be in stock in Japan and until September 10, so if you've got a long-distance dessert hook-up, now's the time to flex it or else you'll be paying through the nose for it on eBay in a few months' time – or should that be the throat?
