It seems like Japan is always ahead of the curve when it comes to over-the-top food flavours we need to try. It has Starbucks Key Lime Pie Frappuccinos, McDonald's Cherry Blossom Floats and Green Tea Oreos. But the dessert we're most envious of has got to be Kit Kats.

You've probably seen (or even tasted) Japan's super-popular green-tea Kit Kats, which were launched back in 2004. The flavours go way beyond that, though – Nestlé has actually come up with more than 300 in Japan alone, including blueberry cheesecake, grilled potato, mustard wasabi and cherry blossom.

They even have Kit Kat sushi.

Now, Nestlé is capitalising on the hype and creating a new factory – the company's first to open in Japan in 26 years – to keep up with the demand and continue churning out new concoctions.

A spokesperson told CNNMoney that the factory, which opens in Himeji in August, is meant to satisfy "the increasing domestic and international demand", so here's hoping some of them make it to the UK.

Kit Kats are the top-selling chocolate Nestlé product in Japan, with a sales growth of 50% since 2010.

Interestingly, part of the reason Kit Kats are thought to be such a success in Japan is their name: Kit Kat sounds similar to "kito kato", a Japanese phrase that translates to "to surely win". As such, the choccies are often given to kids on testing days or special occasions.

With literally hundreds of tastes to choose from, you don't really need much of an occasion to try a new one, though.

Meanwhile, if you're not in Japan and need a new way to eat Kit Kats, this tricked-out cake won't disappoint.
