A man woke up to an unexpectedly messy kitchen last week, with food strewn everywhere and strange marks on his fridge.

He was in for an even more unsettling surprise when he looked at the home security footage on his Nest system and realised a bear had been wandering around his house for five hours while he slept soundly.

On the black and white CCTV footage, recorded at homeowner Chris O'Dubrhraic's house in Colorado, US, the bear can be seen opening the fridge as casually as a human would, and rummaging through the cabinets like Goldilocks in reverse.

He then wanders down the hallway, checking out other rooms in the house. The bear entered through a closed window, and left before anyone woke up.

"It's unsettling to know that something that powerful and something that untamed and potentially dangerous is roaming around your house for five hours," O'Dubrhraic told Fox5.

After he figured out what happened, O'Dubrhaic called the police and wildlife officials to report the incident. And here's the unexpectedly sad, and decidedly un-Paddington, end to the story: the bear had to be put down.

"Unfortunately that bear has learned too much about bad behaviour," Corey Adler of Colorado Parks and Wildlife said. "We have to then put that bear down."
