The Sims 5 is not happening
Project Rene had been assumed by many to be The Sims 5, but EA executive Kate Gorman has now clarified that there won't be a successor to The Sims 4 in the traditional sense.
"We are not going to be working on replacements of previous projects. We're only going to be adding to our universe," she told Variety.
What to Read Next
"We're still continuing to support The Sims 4 more than ever [and still continuing] to deliver expansion packs and updates and fixes. But what this is to say is, the way we're going to do things going forward is a little different."
First details for The Sims movie
EA will be working with Amazon MGM on The Sims movie, and EA executive Kate Gorman has given an early tease on what fans can expect from the big-screen adaptation.
"What I will tell you is it’s very much rooted in The Sims universe," she said. "And what we want is to have a truly authentic Sims experience brought to a theatrical release."
Gorman spoke of wanting the movie to have as big an impact as Margot Robbie's Barbie, adding: "We know there’s so much love and nostalgia... So we want this to be an experience that reflects all that amazing history and play of so many people in this world, but also is something that you can share across generations and to be part of pop culture and culturally relevant."
She also confirmed there will be Easter eggs, teasing: "There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalised any of those details."
The Sims 4 pitches new expansion ideas
A variety of expansion ideas have been pitched by the team as part of a new community survey, and they are looking for your feedback.
The survey can be filled out here. One theme revolves around a "gritty city" where Sims can become a con artist, mafia boss, or crime-fighting vigilante, while another takes place in a world where "civilisation has collapsed" and Sims must "adapt to survive".
A different idea centres on a "vibrant ocean world" and features hidden treasure, marine life, and voyages.
There are nine ideas for expansion packs in total, so feel free to share your thoughts and comments in the official survey.
Reaper's Rewards Event rewards revealed
The Sims 4's latest limited-time event kicks off on September 24, and we now know what rewards can be claimed during the event period.
During the Reaper's Rewards Event, Simmers can collect event points by completing quests. These event points can be used to claim rewards.
The rewards include a Scare Seeker lot challenge, new earrings, jeans, and boots, a casket, a bicycle, and a tome which can be used to level up Cooked, Gourmet Cooking, and Fishing skills at the same time.
You can find full details for the event here.
The Sims 4 update adds colour variants and items
A new base game update for The Sims 4 is out.
The patch comes with a bunch of bug fixes (including many for Lovestruck), but it also comes with 650 new colour variants for build/buy items. There are also some new items, including archways, doors, and ground covers.
You can watch the short trailer for the update here and read the full patch notes here.
The Sims 4's newest kits are out now
Two new kits launched for The Sims 4 on September 19.
The Storybook Nursery Kit offers new build/buy content for babies, infants, and toddlers, and was created in collaboration with content creator SixamCC.
The Artist Studio Kit is a build/buy collection that pairs well with creative-type Sims who enjoy their own studio.
The Sims 4 announces creator kits
A new type of kit is coming to The Sims 4 this year.
Creator kits are kits "designed and built by community creators" that will be officially published by The Sims' development team.
While PC and Mac users have access to custom content, console Simmers don't. "This is a big step forward in delivering creator-made content that's console-friendly and curated with safeguards," the Sims team said (via an official post).
The first creator kits are scheduled to launch this November.
Project Rene confirmed as a multiplayer, "social" entry
Lastly, we have an update on Project Rene.
We now know for sure that Project Rene isn't The Sims 5. It also sounds like EA is trying to set Project Rene apart from the other Sims games, with EA executive Kate Gorman talking up its multiplayer focus.
"We have a lot of learnings from The Sims Online," she told Variety. "We know that there is an opportunity to play in a very social, real-time, multiplayer environment within our gamespace. We haven't delivered that experience with The Sims 4 or any of our other titles yet, so we're looking at what that means and could look like."
There will also be a "small invite-only playtest" for Project Rene this autumn. Simmers can apply for playtest access via The Sims Labs, a new platform where players can test various products and features in progress.
