Ofcom is working with multiple tech companies to trial what it calls 'white space' technologies.

The idea of the new tech is that gaps in the broadcast spectrum are used to send information away from traditional mobile networks. Google and London Zoo are a major part of the trial, and are using a live feed of cameras from the meerkat enclosure to demonstrate the technology.

The idea is that bandwidth traditionally not used can instead be given commercial purposes - in this case, meerkats - but it could apply to endangered species, factories, safety applications and security.

It also could brighten the future for rural broadband, as long distance Wi-Fi signals can be set up via the free spectrum.

"Compared with other forms of wireless technologies, such as regular Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the radio waves used by TV white space devices can travel longer distances and more easily through walls," said an Ofcom spokeperson.

But what if you're not interested in meerkats? Well, there's also feeds featuring otters and Galapagos tortoises to enjoy.
