Pokémon Scarlet Violet trailer, release date and new Legendaries

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have not only got a new trailer that's sent fan art communities into a fever, but the newest games in the long-running series have also got a release date. If you thought the recent double whammy of Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus meant we weren't getting Gen 9 this year, you were wrong.

First up, the trailer. There's a lot of standard stuff here – the battles are the same, animations have been reused, the trees still look questionable – but we've got the addition of four-player co-op, letting you run around the open areas with friends.

But that's not what has got the fans talking. No, it seems all that anyone can talk about are Sada and Turo, the new professors for Scarlet and Violet, respectively. And it's not because they are version exclusive professors for the first time ever, but because they are hot professors.

It wasn't just the new duo that had fan art popping up online in record time, but one of the new Pokémon. Electric-type Pawmi and Grass-type Smoliv are cute, but Normal-type Lechonk has taken social media by storm. As a sad pig with an unfortunate name, people starting meme-ing Lechonk to the top of Twitter trends almost instantly.

Less discussed are Scarlet and Violet's respective legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon. One looks like a dinosaur with an olden-looking spiked wheel, while the other looks like a robot snake with motorbike feet.

This ties in with the visual theming of the new professors, not to mention how their names are shortened versions of the Spanish words for past and future (the game's region is based on Spain, seemingly), and it looks like we might have a time travel story on our hands.

That would explain the trailer's closing shot of a Pokéball travelling through a shattered glass-like space.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will be released on November 18 on Nintendo Switch.
