Hollyoaks has made some impressive casting choices in the past – for one, who can forget Tabby Maxwell-Brown being played by TV royalty Linda Gray?

But in more bizarre twist, there was a time when Jimmy Krankie could have made a turn as a villain in the show.

No we can't really imagine it either – but, according to the Daily Star, show bosses were very keen to get actress Jannette Tough to star in the soap.

However, she turned the opportunity down after worrying that playing a villain would damage the Krankies' family-friendly reputation.

She said: "They wanted me to play an old granny who was terrible and evil.

"And I thought, 'I can't play an old granny who is evil and then go into a panto. The kids would hate me."

And it looks like the 69-year-old actress is determined not to join the soap, saying: "If they asked another time I still wouldn't do it. I don't think so. Our lives are really only about panto. And we go to Australia for three months of the year."

Seems pretty sensible to us.

Her husband Ian added: "I think maybe they saw Janette in the Ab Fab movie and thought she wanted to do more straight acting. But she doesn't."

Janette replied: "I am a soap fan. But I've not seen much of Hollyoaks."

Janette recently featured in the Absolutely Fabulous film as a male fashion guru called Huki Muk. The film faced some accusations of racism for casting her in a Japanese role.
