Hollyoaks will be bringing in a troublesome new character as part of Sienna and Ethan's story, Digital Spy can exclusively confirm.

The couple's romance will be rocked later this year by the new arrival, which threatens to tear them apart forever.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the show's executive producer Lucy Allan said: "Who doesn't love Sienna and Ethan? But we can't give everybody a happy ever after as no one really believes in them! We would love to find a happy ever after this year but not with Sienna and Ethan.

"We have an exciting new character coming into the show who will throw a bomb between that couple.

The underhand mannerisms and ways of Sienna may become her undoing through this story.

"Ethan has been a brilliant asset to the cast since he's arrived and we are really excited to see him doing more both in terms of romance and other drama across the show as well."

There might be no happy ending for Sienna here, but Allan has promised brighter times ahead for her partner-in-crime Ste.

"Ste and James have obviously been circling one another for a long time now", Allan said.

"I think we worked really hard through that whole James story to ensure that actually those two were not disloyal to each other romantically within that story."

She continued: "There may have been moments but we kept the reality of how they felt about each other running through the show and that's going to be a big story. We are really keen to lean into the romance theme again within the show.

"It was obviously difficult at two metres socially distanced to get people building relationships and maintaining relationships, but without those restrictions, romance is a big one for us this year. But of course romance for Ste and James does not come without its challenges."
