Emmerdale viewers have praised the show for highlighting the relevant issue of homophobia in prisons.

Fan favourite Aaron Dingle was sentenced to 12 months behind bars last night, before immediately being thrown into a difficult dilemma as he had to decide whether to be honest about his sexuality or not.

Upon his arrival at the jail, Aaron discreetly asked one of the prison guards what his best option was - and was warned that he'd face a difficult time if the other inmates knew he was gay.

Deciding it was best to avoid drawing any extra attention to himself, Aaron reluctantly removed his wedding ring and opted not to disclose his sexuality in his induction form - a sombre moment so soon after his happy wedding to Robert Sugden.

The harsh realities of life in prison also quickly dawned on Aaron when he witnessed the other inmates targeting a gay prisoner.

Aaron instinctively defended the other guy, but quickly covered up his motivation by insisting that he was just trying to avoid any trouble.

While Emmerdale's Robron fanbase have naturally been left distraught over Aaron's sentence, they have also been congratulating the show for shedding light on another difficult issue.

Although tonight's episode won't feature the Aaron story, you can expect to see plenty more from him next week as Robert and Chas both come to visit.

When Robron come face-to-face again, they hide the true nature of their relationship to avoid any unnecessary attention - but the big question is whether a secret intimate moment between them could still be spotted by someone.

There'll be even more trouble for Aaron when the top dog in prison realises that he's the son of child abuser Gordon Livesy, who took his own life at the same jail last year.

Emmerdale's producer Iain MacLeod recently revealed: "The story becomes, 'Can he escape his past and can he get over his past? What impact does the struggle he has inside have on his family on the outside? And what degree does he feel able to be honest with them about what he's going through?'

"Robert, Liv and everyone else are worried sick about him. But however bad it gets in there, is it the right thing for Aaron to share it with them? It's only going to make it worse for them in terms of their level of anxiety.

"So it's big, complicated, interesting and feels very much of our time. With every news report that comes out, I feel more and more pleased that we've been able to do something in this area."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
