Emmerdale newcomer Louise Jameson has teased that she may have a long future on the ITV soap as she confirms that she would "love to stay" for a good while yet.

The former EastEnders actress and Doctor Who companion is set to make her debut as Rhona Goskirk's (Zoe Henry) mum Mary on the hit ITV soap next week, arriving in time to disrupt her daughter's plans to propose to Marlon Dingle.

The "no nonsense" character has a strained relationship with her daughter and, after the initial surprise of Mary's return, Rhona is suspicious of her mum's intentions as she tries to discover why she has come to Emmerdale.

In an interview with Digital Spy and other media, Jameson also teased that she may have a long-term future on the show.

"I've got all my toes and fingers crossed so it just depends on what the powers that be think, I would love to stay," she gushed.

When it was announced that Jameson would join the cast, producer Laura Shaw said: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Louise to Emmerdale. It's great to have such a high calibre and talented actor join our already strong team and she will be a fabulous asset to the show."

Jameson admitted that the team were still "moulding" her character but that she was a "little bit narcissistic."

"We're still moulding her, but she's a very push-pull kind of character. I think she probably suffers a little bit with narcissistic personality disorder," she added.

In an attempt to keep some elements of her storyline a mystery, Jameson teased that Mary could stir up some trouble in the village.

"I don't know for sure, I suspect she's going to get her finger in as many pies as possible, you know, sit on committees and gatecrash other people's parties. And she's just got an opinion on everything that should be happening in the village, rather than what could be happening in the village.

"So I think she probably will see herself as some kind of… not a guru exactly. But as somebody who can really have something to offer, whereas a lot of people will probably prefer her to stop interfering."

Jameson is known for playing Rosa Di Marco in EastEnders and Leela in Doctor Who and hass admitted she was excited to return to a soap again as a feisty and fun mother.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
