Amy Walsh and Toby-Alexander Smith reveal midwife's soap ties

Emmerdale star Amy Walsh and EastEnders actor Toby-Alexander Smith welcomed their first child together late last year, and now they've opened up about their midwife's surprising soap connection.

Turns out, Smith, who plays Gray Atkins on the long-running BBC series, met Tamsyn, the medical professional who assisted in little Bonnie Mae's birth on December 27, at work earlier on in 2021, when she would stop by the set frequently to ensure any labour-related scenes played out as realistically as possible.

"Tamsyn was overseeing that the actors were doing the right thing," Smith explained to OK! Magazine. "We were chatting and she was saying she is a midwife at the same hospital we were going to. I took her number and we ended up having some private antenatal classes with her.

"She said, 'If you’re happy to have me, I'd love to be part of your labour journey.' So we said, 'Absolutely.' The minute we met Tamsyn, we trusted her."

"She was an angel," Walsh, who portrays Tracy Metcalfe in ITV's Emmerdale, added. "To have someone familiar at that hospital was great. She was like a friend on call all the time."

Elsewhere in the interview, Smith said that they're "totally smitten" with Bonnie Mae, and that the experience of being parents has "exceeded every expectation imaginable".

"It's just amazing and really special," he continued, as Walsh gushed: "We both look at her and cry! All she has to do is open her eyes and look up at you and it sets you off."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays. EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
