Emmerdale's Roxy Shahidi offers clue over Liam Cavanagh's secret

Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi has opened up about Leyla's reaction to Liam Cavanagh's increasingly "peculiar" behaviour, hinting that when the truth is finally revealed, Leyla is blindsided.

Roxy's character Leyla is faced with a difficult decision in next week's Emmerdale, after she discovers that her husband has been lying to her about working at Hotten General hospital.

After noticing Liam putting flowers into his car and driving off, Leyla and Priya Kotecha follow him to a house – but a concerned Leyla ultimately decides not to confront him.

Explaining why Leyla avoids telling Liam she knows he's been lying about his job and whereabouts, Roxy revealed that a separate piece of information soon comes to light that is "even more shocking and left-field".

"[Leyla] finds out another piece of information, which in a weird way is even more shocking and left-field," the actress teased. "It's really not what Leyla expected. She doesn't quite know how to broach it because it's so peculiar."

Adding that Leyla is "grateful" to learn that Liam isn't having an affair with Bernice Blackstock, as she initially suspected, Roxy continued: "She decides that she just has to be grateful that it wasn't what she thought and also that he's safe and home.

"That's all she can do on the day, if that makes sense."

As for what Liam's intriguing secret could be, the cast are keeping coy. What we do know, however, is that Leyla and Liam's marriage isn't necessarily at risk.

"I think there is so much going on – and it's not to say that the distance growing between the two of them couldn't break Leyla – but at this point, I feel Leyla is still fully invested in trying to help a man she loves heal in any way and understand what's going on.

"We're hoping that when Leyla confronts him about what he has been doing, that really is a make-or-break moment. Either he admits it and continues to turn away, or he admits what he's been going through and asks for her help.

"It's less about whether Leyla is willing to walk away, it's whether Liam is ready to re-engage in this marriage."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
