Emmerdale is currently airing a devastating cancer storyline for Vanessa Woodfield, with the character beginning chemotherapy treatment next week.
While some soap plots don't have a definite ending, waiting to see audience reaction before working out where to go, Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has stated that the bosses know exactly how the story is going to play out.
"I won't say which way it goes, but I was told straight away. As soon as [Emmerdale's executive producer] Jane Hudson brought me up, she told me the storyline and the outcome.

"I didn't even have time to think about it one way or another. As soon as I was told the story, I was told the outcome. It wasn't a case of 'here's the story but we don't know yet'. So I've always known what happens in the storyline but my lips are sealed..."
The actress has stated that she found that filming the storyline, which began in January, quite "tough" but feels that as she long as she is doing justice to the real-life experiences that people go through, she is happy.

She added: "People who are going through it are saying: 'Well done to Emmerdale for not shying away when describing symptoms and talking about poo, because it's not often done'.

"When I got the scripts I thought: 'I've got to say the word poo a few times, this is good and I'm glad we are'.
"It isn't just saying 'a bit of toilet trouble' or 'tummy ache', it was describing blood in poo and that's been praised a lot."
