It was a tempestuous New Year's Day on Emmerdale, as residents coped with hangovers and ever more interpersonal drama.

At the forefront was the fallout of Matty Barton's beating at the hands of Isaac and his gang of thug friends.

Matty wanted to keep his head down and try to get on with his life – and took a step towards doing so by being rehired at The Woolpack.

However, Cain Dingle had other ideas – ideas involving teaching Isaac a lesson.

While suggesting to Matty that he call the police (which surprised viewers, given Cain's past), he found out from Victoria the location of the pub that Isaac and his cronies liked to frequent, and waited to confront him.

After threatening Isaac against a wall, Cain seemed to balk, seemingly reminded of his final interaction with Joe Tate.

He stormed off – but not before Isaac returned with support in tow, and surrounded Cain.

Despite Cain's being outnumbered, some fans were optimistic he'd make a go of things:

But alas, that was not to be, as Cain was left bruised and bloody by the gang – barely managing to crawl into his car as darkness fell.

Elsewhere, Bernice grappled with the realities of ageing, and Harriet tried to find a breakthrough with a troubled Dawn.

It seems 2019 has plenty of drama in store on Emmerdale...

Emmerdale continues on ITV on weeknights at 7pm, with an extra episode on Thursday nights.
