EastEnders has confirmed that a tragic death storyline is in the works for one of the soap's original 23 characters, in a hugely emotional cliffhanger on Friday (October 19).
What to Read Next
The BBC One soap delighted many last night by reuniting Dot Branning (June Brown) with her close friend and long-time physician, Harold Legg (Leonard Fenton), when she became alarmed for her health.
In Friday's episode, the pair reminisced about their more-than 30 years together in Walford before Dr Legg assured Dot that she's definitely not dying — a reference to the many times he'd helped her with her hypochondria over the decades.
To celebrate the good news, Dot invited Dr Legg to join her at the Vic for Robbie Jackson's (Dean Gaffney) birthday party. Once the two arrived, Dr Legg had a chance to reunite with Sonia and Martin, who he hadn't seen in many years.
But the episode ended with some shocking news when Dr Legg admitted to Dot that he'd recently been to see the doctor himself and had received a devastating diagnosis.

"There's something very special about this place, you know," he told her. "I'm glad I got back to see it again, well, to see you again, Dot. I'm the only one here that's unwell. As a matter of fact, I'm dying."
The tragic revelation was heartbreaking for many viewers, especially since Dr Legg is one of the few original characters left in EastEnders:
This tragic storyline will continue next week as Dot grapples with the news that her long-time confidant is dying. Will she shut out the sad reality of the situation or step up to support Dr Legg in his final days?
Find out when EastEnders continues on Monday (October 22) at 8pm on BBC.
