The former Corrie star played Kyle's mum Alison Slater for a one-episode role earlier this month, and while she hasn't been asked back yet, Welch would be happy to return.

"They haven't asked me and it will depend on what I'm doing. If there's a cracking storyline then of course I'll be embracing it," she told the Daily Star Online.

"I just want to say that I did one guest episode of EastEnders. Everyone seems to think I'm signed up for life and I'm absolutely not but it's a very important story."

Welch garnered praise for an emotional performance as her character harshly rejected Kyle, who she hadn't seen since he transitioned from his old life as Sarah.

The actress also reflected on her time on BBC Two's Boy Meets Girl, which was among the winners at the British LGBT Awards on Friday (May 13).

"I feel very honoured to be representing the trans community in that way. I think 2015 and 16 has seen huge advances and acceptance of that particular community," Welch noted.

Boy Meets Girl, which follows a love affair between an older transgender woman and a younger cisgender male, will be back for a second series later this year.
