Stuart Highway has made a potentially life-saving decision to have cancer surgery in EastEnders.

In recent months, Stuart has been refusing to be treated using traditional medicine for his breast cancer because he is scared of the physical toll it could take on him.

The Highways hid the news from their surrogate mother Bernie Taylor until after she gave birth this week, but Rainie couldn't go through with the adoption without finally admitting Stuart's health to Bernie.

In Thursday's (March 31) episode, Bernie came to the very difficult decision that she could not hand over the baby boy to the Highways as long as Stuart was refusing treatment.

"If you don't get the treatment you need, you're not going to be around for the baby or Rainie," Bernie pointed out.

The situation was complicated because Stuart was still under the influence of the dodgy Warren, who has been encouraging his fears and pumping him full of lies about having cancer surgery.

At the same time, Rainie was a low ebb as she considered drinking again until Stuart's nan Vi Highway made a surprise return. Once Rainie explained what's been going, Vi made it her mission to sort Stuart out.

Vi confronted Stuart, as he admitted all of his fears are rooted in becoming addicted to drugs again during the treatment. However, Vi promised Stuart that he will have his whole family standing by him — and his newborn son too.

Bernie was getting ready to leave once again when Vi and Stuart rushed to the scene to promise her he would get the surgery. Plus, Stuart vowed he was done with dodgy Warren once and for all.

A delighted Bernie handed over the baby boy, now named Roland, as Stuart got to hold his son in a heartwarming final scene for the episode.
