EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has hinted at the beginning of a dark new storyline for Tommy Moon after he accidentally hurt his mum Kat Slater in tonight's episode.

Recent episodes have seen the youngster targeted by older students at school after he stood up for his cousin Scarlett Butcher earlier this year, while news that Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is facing a lengthy prison sentence has left Tommy (Sonny Kendall) even more fearful about how to protect himself.

Last week's episodes saw things reach a dramatic head when Phil threatened the bullies to leave Tommy alone, but unfortunately for Tommy his bullying ordeal didn't stop there, and Monday night's (February 28) trip to Walford saw the bullies demanding money from Tommy.

As he insisted that the bullies wouldn't dare try messing with him anymore after Phil's actions last week, Tommy asked mum Kat (Jessie Wallace) for money, claiming that it was for a school trip.

"You can't bunk off school to ask me for money," Kat told Tommy as she refused to hand over the cash, only for Tommy to receive a text from one of the bullies demanding money from him.

"We are waiting where is our cash," one text read, later followed by: "£££ by the end of the day."

Later on, Kat realised that Mitch's wages were missing from the office and it wasn't long before her suspicions turned to Tommy as the main culprit, but when the soap then cut to Tommy, the bullies were still pestering him for the cash.

As Tommy began taunting the bullies over their reactions to Phil's shocking behaviour last week, he told them that Phil would be out of prison shortly and ready to protect him once again.

"Leave me alone, and he'll leave you alone," Tommy said before walking away.

Unfortunately for Tommy, Kat then appeared to demand that he give the stolen money back, while Tommy insisted that he didn't take anything.

"You're the only one who knew it was there," Kat said, before letting slip in front of the bullies that Phil was going away "for life". As the bullies quickly clocked that Tommy wouldn't have Phil backing him up after all, an embarrassed Tommy stormed away.

With tensions between mother and son at an all time high, things soon reached breaking point later at home when Kat asked Tommy once again if he was being bullied and Tommy insisted everything was ok.

"You showed me up in front of my mates, like you've been showing me up my whole life," Tommy said. "I knew you'd be like this now Phil's gone."

As Tommy tried to leave the house, an angry Kat demanded that he stop and talk to her but Tommy retaliated by pushing his mum away, leading her to cut her hand as she fell onto the table and broke a glass.

Later, Kat covered for Tommy when she asked what had happened to her hand, but it quickly became clear that she was struggling to hold herself together. With Phil gone and Tommy now lying and hurting her, is the soap setting up a dark new storyline for Tommy?
