Minor EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders' Janine Butcher is arguably one of soap's most iconic characters, having been responsible for such shocking moments as the murder of her husband Barry Evans and killing Danielle Jones in a hit-and-run.

But actress Charlie Brooks – who's played Janine in several stints since 1999 – has revealed that Janine's legacy has had one drawback, as she said she's "definitely" faced typecasting since appearing on the soap.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com and other press, Charlie described Janine as "a bit iconic as a character" and explained that it can be "hard for people to see you in anything else" as a result.

"I think I'm A Celebrity (which Charlie won in 2012) probably helped with that because they're like, 'Oh! Charlie and Janine are very different', thank God! Although I'm sure there are some similarities in there somewhere, there has to be doesn't there? It scares me to say that!

"So I think definitely there is typecasting that happens, for sure."

The actress added that she can find it frustrating, but that she is also pleased that her portrayal of Janine has had such a strong impact.

"I can either choose to go, 'Oh, shit, I can't do anything else, am I only ever going to be seen as that?' or you can go, 'It means she was brilliant,'" she said, adding that playing Janine has given her opportunities to explore other work outside of acting too.

"I don't know if it's got in the way; probably I'd say yes, a little bit, but Janine was brilliant and awesome to play," she said.

Charlie can be seen in a new role this week, as she stars in new drama series Lie With Me, which begins tonight (July 12) at 9pm on Channel 5.

She will also be returning to her iconic role as Janine in EastEnders later this year, with the character set to make her comeback with her young daughter Scarlett.

The soap has promised that her return will "send shockwaves around Walford", with "trouble" due to follow her back to the Square.

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One. All of this week's episodes are currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
