EastEnders spoilers follow.

Max Branning and the Carters are set for a life-changing New Year's Day episode in EastEnders.

Decisions will be made in this special edition of the BBC One soap that will impact both the Brannings and the Carters forever, as Max (Jake Wood) plans to leave Walford.

Max has surprised Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) by asking her to run away with him to New Zealand, and to bring Ollie along!

In preview photos from the New Year's Day episode, Max arrives at the Millennium Bridge, having asked Linda to meet him for one final look at London before they begin their new lives together.

But, as the photos show, Max will face a nerve-wracking wait to find out whether Linda will join him, or whether she'll stand him up at the eleventh hour.

It's no secret that Linda has been having second thoughts about leaving husband Mick (Danny Dyer), even after the Carters announced their separation to son Lee in the New Year's Eve episode.

Although Linda promised she'd call off the New Zealand trip to help Mick with his depression, he encouraged her to go ahead with Max.

However, Mick later reached a breakthrough in a phone call with a Samaritans phone counsellor who helped him realise that Katy Lewis had abused him as a child and manipulated him into splitting with Linda.

Viewers know that Max will definitely be leaving Walford soon, with Jake Wood having shot his final scenes earlier in December.

Teasing Max's exit, he confirmed to Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan that his long-running character will not be killed off.

"It's not going to be a cab exactly but they're leaving the door open so I'm pleased," he hinted.

EastEnders will reveal Linda's big decision on Friday (January 1) at 8pm on BBC One.
