EastEnders spoilers for Tuesday, June 16's episode follow.

A farewell message at the end of yesterday's (June 16) EastEnders has left fans in bits.

The BBC One soap has now been forced to go off-air, as no more new episodes are available to broadcast due to the ongoing pandemic's adverse effect on the entertainment industry.

The simple words "To Be Continued..." appeared after the credits, and the temporary farewell was enough to tip some TV lovers over the edge.

Writing on Twitter after the Walford drama ended with Sharon back behind the bar (much to Phil's dismay), one user shared: "'To be continued...' I was coping so well until I saw that at the end @bbceastenders, and that was when it really hit home [sad emoji] but what a cliffhanger to end on.

Touched by this goodbye, more viewers soon weighed in on social media.
