EastEnders' Callum Highway will step in to support Ben Mitchell after he suffers an unfortunate setback while waiting for an operation in next week's episodes – but will Ben appreciate it?

In scenes set to air next week, Callum will return to the Square to support Ben amid growing concerns for his hearing, but things are soon upended when Ben is told that doctors will not be able to go ahead with his operation while he's unwell.

During a visit at the hospital, Kathy is distracted after spotting newcomer Frankie arguing with a doctor. Overhearing their conversation, Ben begins to have concerns about his future, which are only made worse when the operation is called off.

The arrival of Frankie, played by Rose Ayling-Ellis, was announced back in February as EastEnders bosses confirmed the new hearing loss storyline for Ben following the boat disaster.

The soap is working closely with the National Deaf Children's Society for the storyline, with executive producer Jon Sen explaining that it had been a "long-time ambition of EastEnders" to cover the issue.

EastEnders will air these scenes next week on BBC One.
